Eleven Dead as Floods Sweep Through Madagascar Capital

(MENAFN) Devastating flooding triggered by relentless downpours has claimed 11 lives across Madagascar since late November, with six additional people sustaining injuries, the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management confirmed Tuesday.

The nation's capital, Antananarivo, has suffered some of the most severe destruction. Officials report 274 residents have been impacted by the disaster, while 26 homes have either sustained major damage or been completely obliterated.

Authorities from the Urban Commune of Antananarivo issued urgent warnings to residents, pressing the public to "remain highly vigilant" and instructing "all families living in old or unsafe traditional houses to evacuate to safe locations."

Madagascar's meteorological service issued a Tuesday advisory indicating no immediate relief is expected. Heavy precipitation will continue battering the northwestern territories and central highlands over the next several days, with southern areas also bracing for significant rainfall.

The island nation, positioned in the western Indian Ocean, faces its annual rainy season spanning November through March. This cyclical weather pattern routinely produces catastrophic consequences—claiming lives, forcing mass evacuations, and submerging extensive tracts of farmland under floodwaters.
